Types of Adoption Websites

Just like any type of news or information, the source matters. There are many different kinds of adoption websites, and some can be more trustworthy than others.

The various categories of adoption websites include:

Adoption Professional Websites

Adoption professionals include organizations such as:

  • National adoption agencies
  • Local adoption agencies
  • Adoption attorneys

These professionals are trained and licensed in their field of work. American Adoptions, for example, is a national adoption agency that is fully licensed and regulated by strict ethical and legal standards.

Because of this, the information provided by professionals’ adoption websites for babies, children, birth parents and adoptive families is often among the most trustworthy you can find online.

Generally, adoption professionals’ websites:

  • Offer adoption services and online education to people considering adoption
  • Can include adoption agencies, attorneys or other adoption service providers
  • Help complete most or all steps of the adoption process

Online Adoption Advertisers or Matching Websites

Some hopeful parents’ first instinct is to look for places to adopt a baby online. Although you can’t complete the entire adoption process over the internet alone, some organizations claim to help hopeful adoptive families find a child to adopt online.

These organizations often run adoption ads online, and you may stumble across one in your search.

You are likely to find that these sites:

  • Match adoptive families and birth parents
  • Include adoption facilitatorsadoption law centers and adoption profile websites
  • Match adoptive families and birth parents but lack other necessary services to complete an adoption

Keep in mind that these types of professionals, such as adoption facilitators and law centers, are almost always unlicensed and unregulated. As a result, they aren’t as reputable or trustworthy as agencies, which complete all steps of the adoption process.

Informational Adoption Websites

Many websites provide trustworthy information on adoption without actually providing adoption services themselves. For example, sites such as Considering Adoption provide accurate internet adoption information for anyone searching for adoption online.

Other adoption sites focus on specific aspects of adoption. One of them is Adoption for My Baby, which specializes in information about and for birth mothers. Another, Adoption Agencies, provides useful resources for learning about different types of agencies.

These child adoption sites often:

  • Provide information and resources for both adoptive families and prospective birth parents
  • Include government websites, non-profit websites and ad-based websites
  • Are great for free and accurate adoption information if the site is reputable

What to Look for in a Trustworthy Adoption Website

There are many ways to check the credibility of a child adoption website. To give you some examples, these three traits stand out as reliable litmus tests:

  • Professionalism: Their website is run and supported by educated, licensed professionals in the field.
  • Citing sources: Does the adoption website quote sources or link credible articles when stating facts? A reputable adoption site will back up what it has to say.
  • Balanced perspective: If the adoption website doesn’t explore the challenges of adoption, then the professional is likely more interested in money than honesty.

Also, look at more than one source during your research. Truth is truth, and you can verify facts by looking at many child adoption websites.

The Impact of Adoption Websites for Babies and Children

Thanks to the ability to share adoptive family profile videos online, prospective birth mothers can get a glimpse into the lives of adoptive parents that would otherwise be impossible without adoption websites.

The internet also creates the possibility to share and gather information more efficiently. That leads to communication channels in open adoptions that were never possible before.

Still, there are potential drawbacks to the way the internet has impacted adoption, too. Not all adoption websites are trustworthy.

Although the flood of online adoption information can be positive, it’s important to use your best judgment and exercise caution when looking at adoption websites. Using the standards in this guide is a great place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
