Week 5
First Trimester

What happens to me?

If you have not already tried a home pregnancy test, taking one now will confirm your pregnancy. Once you get confirmation, you should contact a healthcare provider and make an appointment. Good and consistent prenatal care is one of the best ways to ensure that you and the baby will be healthy throughout your pregnancy.

You may be extremely tired or sleepy. Don’t push yourself! It’s best to take your body’s cues that you need more rest during the first trimester (first three months) of your pregnancy. Make a few adjustments to your lifestyle by trying some of the suggestions below:

  • Plan a nap or a few rest periods during your day.
  • Go to bed earlier than you usually do. Allow yourself to sleep late on weekends. Eat a balanced diet.
  • Take your prenatal vitamins.
  • Cut out any unnecessary activities.
  • Ask a family member or other support person to help you with any tasks that seem especially exhausting right now.
Sleeping in a sports bra can help with breast soreness. Some women may also get headaches from the rise in hormones.

There are also a lot of women who will have none of these symptoms. They will progress through early pregnancy without vomiting or being light headed. Do not panic if you do not have pregnancy symptoms, however, you should contact your health care provider should you suddenly lose your pregnancy symptoms.

How much will I be showing?

At this point you will notice no changes.

What happens to baby?

The baby is now called an embryo. It is now possible to differentiate between the head and the tail of the baby. It is divided into three layers that will later form organs and tissues. Low on the sides of the head are two folds of tissue that will become the ears.

The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is forming along with muscle and bone. The baby’s skeleton will begin to take form. The heart and the circulatory system begin to appear and the heart will begin to beat this week. Also, the lungs, intestines, and beginnings of the urinary system are just beginning to form. In the meantime, the early version of the placenta, the chorionic villi, and the umbilical cord, which delivers nourishment and oxygen to the baby, are already busy doing their jobs.

How big is the baby?

Still very small at approximately 1.25mm in length or about the size of an apple seed.

Tip of the Week

While you can continue to exercise during your pregnancy, you should consult your doctor first and move your workouts down to 80% of your previous exercise level!
