Week 14
Second Trimester

What happens to me?

You should start to feel the side effects of early pregnancy, such as frequent urination, fatigue, and nausea, start to diminish. Even though your birth is months from now your breasts may already be making colostrums, the fluid that will feed the baby for the first few days before the milk comes in.

How much will I be showing?

Your uterus is now the size of a grapefruit. Your uterus, while large enough to announce to onlookers that you're pregnant, isn't so huge that it gets in your way.

The hormonal changes in your body are becoming more apparent as you notice changes in your skin. You may have developed a dark line down the middle of your abdomen called a linea negra. The areola (dark nipple portion of your breasts) may have darkened and gotten larger.

Maternity clothes may be needed soon as your regular clothes may start becoming uncomfortable.

What happens to baby?

The baby has now developed its unique fingerprints. When you poke your stomach gently the baby will act as if they are searching for a nipple.

The baby is also now producing urine and actually urinating into the amniotic fluid (This does not harm the baby or you). It also practices "breathing" the amniotic fluid (the liquid in which the baby floats) in and out of its lungs.

Sexual development continues at this point and it is becoming easier to determine if you are having a boy or girl. If you are having a girl, she now has approximately 2 million eggs in her ovaries. She will only have 1 million by the time she is born. By age 17 the number will have dropped to 200,000.

How big is the baby?

The baby is now about 3 to 4 inches long (about the size of your fist) and weighs about 1 ounce (half a banana).

Tip of the Week

As you cut down on caffeine from your diet do not cut out liquids. Chocolate and some medications also contain large amounts of caffeine. Read all food and medicine labels carefully!
