Week 36
Third Trimester

What happens to me?

There is now much less amniotic fluid and much more baby in your uterus. The baby has grown to nearly 1,000 times its original size. You may be feeling breathless as the top of your uterus is up under your ribs. You can try getting down on all fours to take deeper breaths.

The pressure on your bladder will make the bathroom your second home, do not slow or stop drinking plenty of fluids, as they are very important for both you and the baby. Also, you will probably start to see your doctor every week from now until birth.

If you were to start having regular contractions now, your doctor may not try to stop your labor.

How much will I be showing?

Your uterus is more than 5 ½ inches from your belly button. You have probably put on between 25 and 30 pounds, and the baby's elbow, foot, or head may protrude from your belly when it stretches and squirms.

What happens to baby?

The baby continues to grow bigger every day and sometime soon will "drop" down into your pelvis. This will help you breathe more easily, but unfortunately you will now have to urinate even more often than you have been.

About 4% of babies will be breech, which means the baby's buttocks will be down instead of the head. If the baby is breech, do not worry. There are special exercises that your doctor will give you to do that will encourage the baby to turn around into the head down position. If these exercises do not work, your doctor might try manually turning the baby.

How big is the baby?

The baby weighs about 6 pounds. The crown to rump length is over 13 ½ inches and the head to toe length is around 20 ½ inches.

Tip of the Week

Maternity bras are designed to provide extra comfort and support. You may find it helpful to wear one at night when you sleep.
