Week 30
Third Trimester

What happens to me?

The baby's nutritional needs reach their peak during the third trimester. You'll need plenty of protein, vitamin C, folic acid, iron, and calcium.

In addition, exercise is one of the things that you can do to help maintain your energy levels and to increase your stamina for the birth and delivery. Remember not to overdo it, especially if you have not exercised before this week. You may want to try walking at a moderate pace or swimming short distances. Stretching a few times a day may help you feel better and reduce the number of aches and pains you feel.

How much will I be showing?

Your uterus is now around 4 inches from your belly button. Average weight gain to this point can be anywhere from 20-26 pounds. About half of the weight is concentrated in the growth of the uterus, the baby and the placenta, and in the volume of amniotic fluid.

What happens to baby?

The baby's head is getting bigger, and brain growth is very rapid at this time. Nearly all babies react to sound by 30 weeks. The skeleton ossifies (hardens) even more, and the brain, muscles, and lungs continue to mature.

The baby is very aware of its surroundings. It may notice the Braxton Hicks contractions you might be having, but is not adversely affected by them. The baby can also see light and dark depending on the mother's environment.

How big is the baby?

The baby weighs about 3 pounds, and measures about 11 inches crown to rump or 17 inches from head to toe.

Tip of the Week

While it is considered safe to bathe throughout your entire pregnancy, remember to be very careful getting in and out of the tub. Water temperature should also be monitored so your baths are not too hot.
