Week 35
Third Trimester

What happens to me?

If you have been nervous about going into pre-term labor, you will be happy to know that 99 percent of babies born at week 35 can survive outside the womb, and most have no major problems. Though the baby's central nervous system is still maturing, the baby's lungs are nearly fully developed.

Many women start to notice a tingling sensation or numbness in the pelvic region from the baby's weight on the nerves in the legs and pelvis. Unfortunately, this feeling probably will not subside until the baby is born. If you are terribly uncomfortable, mention it to your healthcare provider. You also might have trouble sleeping at night. Between the hormones and the baby pressing on your bladder, you may need to get up to go to the bathroom several times during the night. In addition, many women have a constant backache, which makes relaxing difficult as well.

How much will I be showing?

Your uterus is now about 6 inches from your belly button. Your total weight gain is probably somewhere between 24-30 pounds.

What happens to baby?

The baby’s organs are finalizing their development before birth. The baby is now filling out and getting rounder. It will need the added fat layers later to regulate body temperature. Also, the baby's hearing is fully developed and can distinguish sounds outside the womb.

How big is the baby?

The baby now weighs more than 5 1/2 pounds. The crown to rump length is over 13 inches the head to toe length is probably close to 20 inches long.

Tip of the Week

A strip of tape or band-aid can be placed over the belly button to help reduce sensitivity or keep it from poking out of your clothes.
