Week 39 Third TrimesterWhat happens to me?
There are many ways that your body prepares for labor. First, the baby will descend into your pelvis, which is sometimes called engagement or lightening. This usually happens before labor if it is your first delivery, but if you have already given birth before it may not happen until you go into labor.
Next, your cervix, which is the mouth of your uterus, will begin to soften and possibly dilate (open up). Some doctors will do routine vaginal exams towards the end of your pregnancy and will tell you how much your cervix has dilated, if at all. Other doctors may break your water in order to get things going. If you do not want labor brought on early in this way, tell your doctor before any pelvic exams.
In the days before labor begins you may also experience the following, although they do not necessarily predict when labor will begin:
- Slight vaginal bleeding
- Loss of mucous plug
- Loose stools
- Loss of weight
- Increase in appetite
How much will I be showing?
Your uterus is approximately 6 ˝ - 8 inches from your belly button. Once again since you are near the end of your pregnancy your weight will not fluctuate too much and you should have gained between 25-35 pounds. What happens to baby?
The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is continually replaced every three hours, even during labor. This is the perfect environment for the baby and the baby can practice breathing by inhaling the amniotic fluid.
The baby will continue to build the fat stores that will help regulate body temperature after birth. The baby’s organ systems are fully developed and in place, but the lungs will be one of the last systems to reach real maturity. Even after the baby is born, it may take a few hours before establishing a normal breathing pattern. The brain is the last organ to fully mature. How big is the baby?
The baby weighs a little more than 7 pounds. The crown to rump length is about 14 ˝ inches and the head to toe length approximately 21 ˝ inches. Tip of the Week
