What It Means to Become Parents

Vacation in the Dominican Republic

Being a parent is a lifelong commitment that requires unconditional love and unwavering support. We believe that parents are loving, nurturing, and responsive to their child's needs. Parents support children in safely exploring their world and developing into whoever they desire to be. As parents, we will always be there for a child with the love and attention they need to flourish.

We have both always wanted to become parents, and we are in the perfect place in our lives where we can make it a reality! While we know parenting will be hard work, we also know that we are up to the challenge. We look forward to so many things about being parents from hearing the baby's laugh, to helping the child with homework, to being their biggest cheerleader as they pursue their dreams. We will provide a safe and happy home that among other things will be full of music that the child can sing, play, and dance along with. We look forward to traveling and exploring new places as a family. One of the activities that we look most forward to is reading to the child before bed every night. We will pour all of our energy into raising a child who loves and respects other people and works hard to make their dreams come true.

Our Leisure Time

Melissa Playing Piano

We both love working in our gardens and look forward to having a set of tiny hands to help plant flowers, tomatoes, peppers, and other plants. We also both play the piano and guitar. We enjoy trying new food both at home and at restaurants. Melissa likes to play video games such as Mario Kart and put together jigsaw puzzles on her iPad. Stephen likes to read comic books, watch movies, and put together Lego sets. We also both enjoy spending time with family. Swimming with Melissa's mom in her neighborhood pool is a great way to unwind. When we visit Stephen's family we always make a point to do something fun with our niece and nephews such as visiting the zoo. We love to travel and both wish that we traveled more when we were children. One place that we visit regularly is Walt Disney World where we are both able to truly relax. We look forward to visiting Disney with a child, but are also excited to visit national parks, other cities, and foreign countries. Travel allows for exploration of new people and places, and we want our family to learn through new experiences. Our proximity to Atlanta also provides access to world class shows, zoos, aquariums, and museums. We look forward to taking our child to local festivals and college athletic events. We will share our love of music, the outdoors, family, and travel with our child and look forward to finding new passions through their interests.

Cultural Diversity

Learning about the cultural identity of our child is a priority for us. As we welcome a new child into our lives, our family culture will change as we add new customs to acknowledge and celebrate who our child is and where they come from.

We continue to grow our knowledge of cultural diversity through reading books and listening to podcasts that discuss events from our history that are typically excluded from school learning and other mainstream outlets. We listen to the experiences of racially diverse people to learn how our actions or inactions affect other people. Melissa's job as an education professor has allowed for her to learn about school curricula and empowered her to be an advocate for creating inclusive schools that meet the needs of racially diverse children. As parents we will be involved in our child's education to ensure that who this child is and his/her history and lived experiences are not ignored, rewritten, or silenced.

It is important that our child develop a strong and positive sense of self, which includes celebrating their racial/ethnic identity. Our child will be exposed to positive role models from various races, and we will talk openly about the experiences of people from different backgrounds in American society. Our home will be filled with art, music, books, toys, etc. that represent different races. Above all our child will know that they are loved and that cultural differences are not to be feared but rather embraced and celebrated.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a small city in Georgia. Our cottage style house is beautifully landscaped, which includes a gorgeous Japanese maple tree on one side of the front yard and a huge magnolia on the other side. We live in a multi-level house with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. We have a greenhouse where we grow vegetables year round. Our favorite room is the kitchen, which is large and full of natural light. We also love our "music room" which houses our piano, and we enjoy sitting on our screened porch.

Our Kitchen

We live in a small neighborhood arranged in a circle. We love that our neighborhood is historic and each home is different with its own special charm. Our diverse and tight-knit neighborhood has families with lots of young children and newborns as well as some children old enough to babysit. It is the type of neighborhood where children play across all of the yards, and the adults all know each other and keep an eye on the kids. Each year our neighborhood hosts events including an Easter egg hunt, 4th of July children's parade and pool party, trick-or-treating for the local community, and a Christmas party. There are many wonderful parks nearby that have playgrounds, walking trails, and river access for canoeing or fishing. We frequently go swimming in the neighborhood pool where Melissa's mom lives. Our city has many festivals and events throughout the year such as carnivals, farmer's markets, Christmas light displays, and children's camps.

Our Extended Families

Melissa's Family

Spending time with family is an important part of our lives. Melissa's mother lives 10 minutes away from us, and we are thrilled to spend time with her every week. She is incredibly excited to share her love with a new grandbaby. Melissa has two older brothers. One of them, along with his adult son, lives a few hours away from us, and the other, along with his wife and two grown children live in Colorado. We enjoy visiting each other during holidays and celebrating important milestones such as graduations. One of our favorite family traditions is cooking perogies using our Grandmother's recipe from Poland.

Stephen's Family

Stephen's parents, his two brothers, their wives, and three young children all live in South Carolina only a few hours away. We enjoy visiting with them regularly! Spending time with the children is always the highlight of our visits. We love playing games, reading books, and visiting the zoo with the children. Our favorite time to visit is Christmas because we love eating delicious food and watching the children open their gifts. Stephen's family loves vacationing together and recently spent a week sharing a house at Disney World.

Both of our families are excited about our adoption plan and cannot wait to meet the newest member of the family!

From Us to You

We are so grateful to you for taking time to read our letter. We recognize your strength and the love you have for your child in considering adoption. As you read this letter, we hope you feel the love we have to offer you and your child.

We have been friends since we were 8 years old and grew up two blocks from each other. While Stephen had a huge crush on Melissa throughout high school, we didn't become a couple until college. We've been together and in love for almost 20 years and have been married for 8 years. We have built a strong relationship on the foundation of our friendship and love for each other. We nurture our relationship through enduring hardships together, prioritizing each other, providing unconditional love, and having a genuine enjoyment for each other's company.

We have always believed that adoption was the best path for us to grow our family. This belief was confirmed by two experiences. Early in our marriage we welcomed Melissa's teenage nephew into our home, and we began to provide for him financially, emotionally, and academically. While challenging at times, we experienced immense joy as we used our love as a tool to help him transition from childhood to adulthood. This proved to us that our parental love is unconditional and we are ready to share it with a child regardless of how they enter our life. The second experience was a scary miscarriage where we learned that having a child through biological means would threaten Melissa's life. This was the final sign that adoption is the right path for us.

Our promise to you is that we will love your child unconditionally and support them in becoming whoever they want to become. We will nurture this child's natural curiosity through providing access to sports, music, art, travel, nature, etc. We will instill in them love, compassion, and empathy. We will support this child in developing a strong identity that includes embracing who you are. We welcome continued contact with you through photos, letters, phone/video calls, and in-person visits. We will construct this new family with you, and you will always have a place in our hearts. We want you to be comfortable with your level of involvement and will follow your lead. Your child will always know that you love them, and we will be your greatest champions in reminding them that it was your love that brought them and you into our family.

Our house will be filled with laughter as we are both children at heart. Melissa has an incredible imagination and she is excited to bring stuffed animals to life while Stephen has quite the collection of Legos. We both cannot wait to build and explore new worlds with this child. We love learning through new experiences and are ecstatic about visiting new places with this child such as Yellowstone National Park. We also spend a lot of time gardening and enjoying our beautiful yard. We have plenty of room for a swing set and playing games with neighborhood friends. One of Melissa's favorite childhood memories is swimming and she can't wait to swim with this child in her mother's neighborhood pool. Both of us are most looking forward to reading stories to this child every night.

Our extended families are excited to embrace a new baby. Melissa's mother has begun planning a quilt for the baby. Stephen's parents cannot wait for a fourth grandchild running around their house playing with cousins.

We can only imagine the series of difficult decisions that you are currently making and want to thank you for allowing us to be an option that you are considering. We are a couple who are very much in love, and we know that the right child for us is out there somewhere. They will be raised in a house where they always know they are loved, are surrounded by a happy family, and are given the opportunity to grow into whoever they want to be. If this sounds like the right home for your child then we'd love to get to know each other and answer any questions you may have.
