Week 40 Third TrimesterWhat happens to me?
98% of pregnant women give birth on or between two weeks before or two weeks after their due date, while only 5% of women actually give birth on their due date. If you are late in delivering, your doctor might talk about inducing your labor. Most doctors wait one or two weeks after the due date before inducing labor.
On TV and in the movies pregnant women always break their water in the middle of a crowded room just before going into labor. If this is a concern for you, do not let it be. Membranes rupture unexpectedly in less than 15% of pregnancies, and when it does happen, the baby's head tends to act like a cork at the opening of the uterus, thus keeping the fluids from gushing out.
When your water breaks, you should stay calm as it may be hours before you feel your first contraction. When this happens call your doctor and your Adoption Specialist right away. How much will I be showing?
Not much change. Your uterus is approximately 6 ˝ - 8 inches from your belly button. Since you are near the end of your pregnancy your weight will not fluctuate too much and you should have gained between 25-35 pounds. What happens to baby?
96% of babies at this point are head down with the head wedged into your pelvis. The baby’s immune system is still immature, except for the antibodies it received from you through the placenta. Most of the Lanugo (body hair) has fallen off the baby's body, although you may still find a little, particularly in the creases, and around the shoulders or ears. How big is the baby?
The average baby will be about 7.5 pounds. The crown to rump length is around 15 inches and the head to toe length is about 21 ˝ inches. Tip of the Week
